Maths in Year 6 at Malpas Alport

In Year 6, we focus on building strong mathematical foundations through daily practice and problem-solving challenges. Each day begins with ‘6-in-6’, a short arithmetic session designed to develop fluency and accuracy with key number skills. This regular practice helps pupils build confidence and speed in calculations.

We then move on to Power Maths, a mastery-based programme that deepens understanding through reasoning and problem-solving activities. This structured approach encourages pupils to explain their thinking, apply mathematical concepts in different contexts, and develop resilience when tackling tricky problems.

To ensure that every child is appropriately challenged, we incorporate step-up challenges within lessons. These provide opportunities for all pupils to stretch their understanding and work at a level that meets their individual needs.

By combining arithmetic fluency with reasoning and problem-solving, we aim to equip our Year 6 pupils with the skills and confidence they need for success in maths and beyond.
