English
At Malpas Alport, we are dedicated to providing a high-quality education in English, focusing on the development of both reading and writing skills across the primary phase. We aim to ensure that all pupils are equipped to communicate effectively, both in speaking and writing, enabling them to express their ideas and emotions confidently while engaging with others. Through the process of reading, children have the opportunity to grow culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially, and spiritually. It not only expands their knowledge but also builds on what they already understand.
Our vision is to foster a lifelong love of reading, ensuring that every child becomes an independent reader with a passion for books. A key part of this is our commitment to using a diverse range of high-quality, language-rich texts, which support the development of vocabulary and comprehension skills. By providing these opportunities, we help pupils acquire the tools necessary to thrive in future phases of learning.
The national curriculum for English highlights essential goals, including reading fluently with understanding, developing a love for reading for both pleasure and information, acquiring a wide vocabulary, and mastering grammatical conventions. Additionally, it stresses the importance of writing clearly, accurately, and coherently, as well as honing strong speaking and listening skills for effective communication and learning.
In Key Stage 1, we follow the Read Write Inc. phonics programme to ensure a strong foundation in reading and writing. Through this comprehensive approach, we prepare children for the next stages of their educational journey, enabling them to become confident, competent communicators.
