Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation - Year 6

Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation

Spelling

This year, we are moving away from traditional weekly spelling lists and tests. Research shows that pupils learn more effectively when they apply their spelling knowledge in real writing, rather than memorising words for a test. Instead, we are focusing on embedding a wide range of Year 5 & 6 spellings into our writing through achievable skills.

We will regularly assess spelling by monitoring progress in writing. Children will also take ownership of their own spelling improvements through proofreading, peer editing and redrafting.

Grammar & Punctuation

Understanding grammar and punctuation is a key part of the curriculum, and there are many terms your child will need to know. To support this, Year 6 will complete weekly tasks on satsbootcamp, an online resource designed to help pupils build confidence in grammar and punctuation. Each week, they will work through a set of questions, and every half term, they will complete a longer SATs-style test to track their progress.

Regular practice at home will make a real difference. Encouraging your child to discuss what they are learning and apply their grammar skills in writing will help them feel more confident and prepared.

Thank you for your support in making spelling and grammar a meaningful part of your child’s learning!
